"The UAE is keen to benefit from nature-based solutions to mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change, and I am proud today to announce a new step that will in turn enhance blue carbon ecosystems by raising the goal of planting mangroves to 100 million trees by 2030." This was stated by the UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment, Maryam Al Muhairi.

Al Muhairi announced that new goal during her participation in the high-level ministerial dialogue on adaptation measures to the consequences of climate change, which was held in conjunction with the Day of Adaptation, Loss and Damage at the twenty-sixth Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate (COP26) held in Glasgow, United Kingdom.

"We aim to work closely with NGOs and the private sector to achieve our goals and commit to sustaining the mangrove forests," she added.

The mangrove forests play an important role in protecting the coasts of the UAE from rising sea levels and severe storms, providing natural habitats for biodiversity, and serving as natural carbon sinks.
